Well-Child Visits for Growth and Development Assessments

Though your child needs care when they're sick or injured, well-child visits at Maryland Children Health Center, serving Glenn Dale & Oxon Hill, MD, and the nearby region, are also important to your child's growth and development. Fortunately, you'll have Dr. Mary Ogunsanya on your child's side to provide a thorough exam and guide you and your child in any way possible.

Importance of Growth and Development Checks

You want your child to grow and develop to their fullest. This means ensuring that they're growing and developing on track and intervening as necessary.

At well-child visits in Glenn Dale, MD, we can assess your child and see their progress. We can also compare their growth to the average and their previous records. We'll then be able to identify any problems as early as possible and intervene accordingly.

We'd like to stress that not all problems are obvious when it comes to your child's growth and development. By having a professional assess your child, we can diagnose issues that you might not have been aware of.

What Happens at Well-Child Visits

Well-child visits are fairly straightforward. We'll begin the process by checking your child's weight and height. Our physician will compare the two to ensure your child is growing appropriately and is at a healthy weight. Our physician will also compare the readings to those of other children of your child's age and gender.

Vital Signs and Heart and Lung Screening

Part of your kid's visit will include us taking your little one's blood pressure and heart rate and ensuring they're normal. We'll also listen to your child's heart and lungs using a stethoscope. During this, we'll be able to hear any murmurs, wheezing, or congestion.

Ears & Eyes

Your kid's eyes and ears are vital to their learning. Though they can live without vision or hearing, they'll need the appropriate accommodations to learn and grow despite any deficits.

That's why part of your child's screening will include looking into their ears and eyes for any problems. We'll also have your child read a chart of letters or shapes (depending on their age) to check their vision. Part of this also includes wearing a pair of headphones and listening for beeps. Your child will need to determine where the noise is coming from, specifically which ear.

  • "I was in this place as a young girl. I wasn't bad but the people who had me in my family kept beating and raping me. I began to start running away. I had no one to protect me. I had gone in to Montrose medical place first. I was so scared but they kept me in medical until they could get me in the children's center.
My foster mom picked me up on Dec 2rth and bought me my first new coat. She and her family were so good to me.
There was a lasted at the children's center who have me a bible and looked after me mainly cause he knew I wasn't a bad girl there were just bad people hurting me."

  • "My daughters are 19 & 18 yrs old, they have been going here since they were toddlers also to the Oxon Hill location. I selected this practice because keeping your time off at work limited when u have children is important. Their office is opened until 7pm on certain nights. Which is great because a parent does not have to take time off of work with a doctor's office opened this late. There is never a long waiting time, service is prompt, friendly & kid happy!!! 😚😙"
