Screening for ADHD in Adolescents

ADHD is a neurological issue that can affect your child's ability to learn and their relationship with others. It can also lead to various behavioral issues. At Maryland Children Health Center, serving Glenn Dale & Oxon Hill, MD, and the nearby region, we can provide an ADHD screening and determine an appropriate treatment approach for your little one.

About ADHD

ADHD can interfere with your child's ability to remain focused on a task. They may have trouble completing a project, especially on a deadline. A child with ADHD may struggle to keep organized and follow directions. And these are only some of the symptoms that your child may exhibit.

When Is Screening Necessary?

We recommend an ADHD screening if your child is struggling to stay focused, and it's affecting their education. If they're having symptoms that are putting a strain on your relationship with them or are causing them problems with teachers or other authority figures, it may benefit you to have your child screened.

ADHD Screening: What It Entails

When you bring your child in for an ADHD screening in Glenn Dale & Oxon Hill, MD, we'll first ask you to complete a medical history report. It'll ask about various conditions they may have and any other ones you know of. We'll also inquire about any allergies they have or medications they take. This information can help determine the problem and prescribe an appropriate, safe treatment.

The screening itself will include a number of questions that relate to your child's behaviors. For instance, we'll ask if your child has trouble focusing on tasks for long periods. It'll inquire about any hyperactivity and how your child responds to following instructions.

Part of your screening will also include us talking to you about your child's issues. We'll inquire about the symptoms and when your child is experiencing them. We'll even want to know about when it started because the issues could stem from a specific reason rather than ADHD.

Providing Treatment

After your child's screening, we'll then provide treatment. Sometimes, that directly addresses an underlying cause of the hyperactivity or inattentiveness in a child who doesn't have ADHD.

However, in a child with ADHD, we may recommend ways you can guide them on staying focused and organized and meeting deadlines. Sometimes, the treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy. In the more extreme cases, medication may be necessary.

Maryland Children Health Center, serving Glenn Dale, MD, and the surrounding area, has Dr. Ogunsanya who can provide your child with an ADHD screening. This will include asking you questions to assess your child's behaviors and then providing a treatment.

  • "I was in this place as a young girl. I wasn't bad but the people who had me in my family kept beating and raping me. I began to start running away. I had no one to protect me. I had gone in to Montrose medical place first. I was so scared but they kept me in medical until they could get me in the children's center.
My foster mom picked me up on Dec 2rth and bought me my first new coat. She and her family were so good to me.
There was a lasted at the children's center who have me a bible and looked after me mainly cause he knew I wasn't a bad girl there were just bad people hurting me."

  • "My daughters are 19 & 18 yrs old, they have been going here since they were toddlers also to the Oxon Hill location. I selected this practice because keeping your time off at work limited when u have children is important. Their office is opened until 7pm on certain nights. Which is great because a parent does not have to take time off of work with a doctor's office opened this late. There is never a long waiting time, service is prompt, friendly & kid happy!!! 😚😙"
